About Modern Machiavelli

Modern Machiavelli is an independent, multi-author publication focused on Machiavelli, political realism, power, strategy, persuasion, the 48 Laws of Power, historical power tactics and manipulation defence.

We have been publishing for more than ten years and today reach more than 300,000 subscribers, followers and community members across our wider network.

Our goal is to build the definitive modern archive of Machiavellian strategy and applied power analysis: historically informed, readable, evidence-conscious and useful beyond the page itself.

A multi-author Platform

Modern Machiavelli is written by several contributors, including Niccolò Nucleo, Lionel Fox, Warped Timeless, Illimitable Man, Illacertus and others.

Different authors bring different areas of experience, interests and interpretation. Some focus more heavily on political power and Realpolitik, others on historical strategy, psychology, persuasion, philosophy or modern applications.

We do not force those perspectives into one artificial house opinion.

What unites the publication is a common standard: understand the mechanism, examine the evidence, identify the incentives and explain what the reader can actually learn from it.

The result is not a collection of anonymous summaries. It is a growing body of analysis from contributors who approach power from different directions.

Experience beyond the Page

Our principal author and editor, Niccolò Nucleo, has more than 20 years of entrepreneurial experience alongside practical experience in politics, political organisation, strategy, communications and media.

His political commentary has appeared on major Austrian television channels including ServusTV, ORF, PULS 4, PULS 24, Krone TV and oe24.TV.

He has founded a political suborganisation and spent years working around politics, communications, organisations and public debate.

He also personally knows Robert Greene, author of The 48 Laws of Power, and conducted an approximately two-hour interview with him in 2023.

Beyond interviews and desk research, he regularly travels to historically significant places to uncover the people, settings and power struggles behind the stories we publish.

We go to the Source

Our research on Machiavelli has taken us to Sant’Andrea in Percussina in Tuscany, where Niccolò Machiavelli withdrew after his political fall.

We have researched and written from the historical area around La Fonte del Machiavelli and Il Borgo Machiavelli, on and around the former Machiavelli property associated with his exile and the creation of The Prince.

We believe this matters.

Historical analysis becomes stronger when the writer understands not only the quotation, but the context around it: the place, the political situation, the institutions, the people involved and the pressures acting upon them.

First-hand experience does not replace scholarship.

It gives scholarship context.

Our Research

Modern Machiavelli is not a summary site.

We examine ideas from Machiavelli, Robert Greene and other thinkers against history, politics, psychology, business, organisational behaviour and modern power structures.

We are particularly interested in questions such as:

  • Why did a strategy work?
  • Under which conditions did it work?
  • What did it cost?
  • When does the same principle fail?
  • Who actually held leverage?
  • What happened after the apparent victory?

Those questions matter because strategy is rarely universal.

A move that creates leverage in one situation can create resistance in another. A successful tactic can produce a disastrous second-order effect. A famous rule may be useful without being a law of nature.

That distinction runs through our work.

The 48 Laws of Power

One of the largest parts of Modern Machiavelli is our continuing analysis of Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power.

Rather than treating the laws as commandments, we examine their historical examples, modern applications, reversals and practical limits.

The Machiavellian Archive

Our broader archive goes beyond Greene.

It covers Machiavelli, political realism, historical strategy, persuasion, propaganda, reputation, conflict, philosophy, manipulation, leadership and the practical mechanics of power.

This is where we collect the deeper historical stories, strategic essays and analyses that form the intellectual core of Modern Machiavelli.

Original Research & Analysis

We increasingly publish original frameworks, interviews, historical research, case analysis, field observations and strategic interpretations.

When we publish our own interviews, photographs, analytical models, field research or original frameworks, ModernMachiavelli.com is the primary source for that work.

Our objective is not simply to explain what others have already said.

We want to produce analysis worth referencing in its own right.

Human-led. Expert-reviewed.

We use artificial intelligence as a research and production tool.

It can assist with research organisation, transcription, translation, source discovery, editing and technical work.

But AI does not determine our editorial conclusions.

Humans evaluate the evidence, shape the argument and approve what is published.

We distinguish between useful AI assistance and mass-produced content created merely because it is cheap to generate.

Human-led. Expert-reviewed. 0% AI slop.

Power, Influence & Manipulation

Modern Machiavelli deals with subjects that are often uncomfortable: manipulation, deception, coercion, propaganda, reputation, persuasion and institutional power.

We study these mechanisms because understanding them matters.

Our focus is increasingly on power literacy: how influence works, how manipulation can be recognised, how leverage is created, how people protect themselves from coercion and where legitimate persuasion crosses into exploitation.

Analysis is not endorsement.

But refusing to examine power does not make power disappear.

We also offer consulting services in areas including strategy, positioning, communications, political analysis, reputation, persuasion and organisational power.

Why Modern Machiavelli exists

Machiavelli remains relevant because the fundamental problems he studied have not disappeared.

People still compete for influence. Institutions still depend on coalitions. Reputation still shapes authority. Incentives still matter more than slogans. Leaders still mistake applause for loyalty, titles for power and temporary victories for durable positions.

The language changes. The machinery does not.

Modern Machiavelli exists to study that machinery with better sources, deeper historical context, real-world experience and enough independence to reach conclusions that may not be fashionable.

We are not interested in making power sound darker than it is.

Nor are we interested in making it more respectable.

We are interested in understanding it accurately.

If you want comforting theories about how power ought to work, there are easier places to look. If you want to understand how it actually moves between people, institutions and interests, welcome to Modern Machiavelli.
